I will be working on an attic conversion and need some advice on insulation products and installation. This is a home built approximately 1890 and is a 3 wye brick building until you get to the attic spaces. Most of that space is framed construction. There is already a floor installed and the homeowners have installed an air conditioner for the 2nd floor in this space as well as a furnace and air conditioner for the 3rd floor. Those units are in place and have been tested and approved by the building inspectors.
I have gotten bids from 2 different insulation contractors. One is for fiberglass in the walls and ceiling will have blown in cellouse. The other is for spray foam, open cell and it will be placed on all outside walls and on all of the roof decking on the inside of the attic. I feel that this is a better system since it seals up the areas better or so I think. On the other hand, neither one of them mention using roof baffles-the foam pieces that you put against the roof deck so air can move to the top of the roof. There are about 4 or 6 attic vents in place now so there is a place for the air to go. I know that air will move thru fiberglass so maybe they are not needed for that system. Not sure about the foam.
What I see is both companies say that their system is the best, both give me about the same amount of R value. Foam is almost exactly twice as much.
So my question is foam versus fiberglass and if roof baffles are needed for either system.
Thanks
